Diary of Kitten Foster Parents

Week 4 and 5

These past two weeks have just been crazy. Let's see - where did we leave off with our first foster kittens of the year. Oh yes - we had just finished introducing the litter box to the kittens, and they have been doing great job. The kittens took their first field trip and went to the shelter for deworming meds and a weigh-in. Ana (the smallest of the litter) went from .035 ounces to 15.3 ounces. That's great! From less than an ounce to almost a full pound! Fat Bert, the heaviest, tipped the scale at 1.11 lbs.

The kitten replacement milk has helped them gain a substantial amount of weight. Dani, Simone and Bert (aka Lambert) have been pounding the bottle, so we decided to try to feed the kittens wet food. For the wet food we use Chicken Soup for the Kitten Lover's Soul. Initially, we mixed the wet food with a bit of kitten replacement milk and gave it to the kittens on a plate. Dani and Simone took to it immediately. Lambert wasn't quite sure what to do or how to eat the wet food. It took him about 3 days but finally figured it out. The 3 kittens who were eating the wet food still wanted the bottle after they ate, but lost interest within a couple of days. Ana, however, still wanted to be bottle fed, and we met her needs for an extra week since she is smaller than her litter mates. However, it really is time for Ana to start eating the kitten wet food because she wasn't gaining enough weight on the bottle alone.

Ana wanted nothing to do with the wet food. This morning I tried putting a lot of kitten milk in with a little bit of the wet food and put it under her nose and she snubbed me. Okay Ana, I'll give you a little bit of your bottle. She drank a bit of the kitten milk and when she took a break, I tried the food again. NO WAY - snubbed me again. I tried a little on my finger and she stuck up her nose. I'll try one more thing - I opened her mouth gently, and put just a little tiny bit of food in her mouth. All of a sudden I could see a light bulb go off in her head, and I know she was thinking - hmmmm this stuff isn't half bad. She cleaned the plate and even ate some wet food later in the day. She still wants her bottled kitten milk, but like with the other kittens, I think she will lose interest soon. They have all started to drink water and are starting to taste the Baby Cat which is their dry food.

Best of all the kittens are cuddly and loving right now, but I know it's the calm before the storm of wildness. In the next couple of weeks, they will start playing hard. Let the kitten games begin.
